Fall Prevention for the Elderly

One of the leading causes of injury among the elderly is falling. Each year, many seniors are rushed to the hospital after taking a fall in their own home and becoming injured. In some cases, these falls and injuries could have been prevented. Here are some ways to help make sure you stay safe and avoid a fall.

  • Clear walkways – Keep items such as cords, newspapers, and other small objects out of the walkway. These items can be easily missed and stepped on accidentally, resulting in a fall.
  • Secure loose rugs – Stepping on a rug that can move easily can quickly cause you to lose your footing. Use double-sided tape or slip-resistant backing to keep the rug in place while you walk on it.
  • Have adequate light – Keeping your house too dark can make it nearly impossible to see objects in your path. Brighten up your rooms with plenty of light so that you can see what’s in your way and successfully navigate around it.

Falls can be easily prevented if you take the proper precautions. Even something as simple as changing the type of shoe you wear can greatly reduce the chance of you falling and injuring yourself. If you or someone you love is starting to have difficulty with mobility, make sure that you are doing what is necessary to avoid falls.
