Gift Ideas for Nursing Home Residents

If you’re planning to visit your loved one in a nursing home, you may wish to bring a present for them when you come. This is a great idea, and can really brighten a person’s day. But what kinds of gifts are best for someone in a nursing home? Here are a few things to keep in mind, as well as a few good suggestions.

Keep Allergies in Mind

When deciding what gift to bring, remember to keep the person’s allergies in mind. Make sure you know what their food allergies are, if you wish to bring them a treat, and ensure they aren’t allergic to any flowers or other plants you may want to give them. While plants are great for brightening up a room, you want to avoid causing any reactions, not only in the person you’re giving them to, but in anyone who may visit their room as well.

Make It Personal

Many nursing home residents find themselves feeling lonely and homesick. Personal items that they can keep in their rooms or carry with them can help to alleviate some of these feelings. When choosing a gift, try to pick something that will be personal and have meaning for them. A photograph of you with your loved one, or a picture of many of their family members can hold a lot of sentimental value for them. You can also bring them personal items that they may have left at home, such as a favorite book, scrapbooks or photo albums, or other items they’ve collected throughout their lives.

And remember, while bringing a gift is a wonderful gesture, oftentimes, your mere presence is what your loved one desires most of all.
