After the age of 65, the risk for injury significantly increases. These injuries can cause immobility, dependence on caretakers, and even death. However, there are simple preventative measures that can be taken to help avoid injuries. Here are some of the best home injury prevention tips for seniors.

Fall Prevention

  • Muscle loss is a naturally occurring process as a person ages. This is accelerated in persons who are not very mobile. The single greatest thing a person can do to combat muscle loss is to stay active. Many gyms offer classes for seniors, which are a great way to make new friends and socialize while building strength, increasing flexibility, and improving balance.
  • The bathroom is particularly dangerous for seniors. It’s easy for even the steadiest and strongest of individuals to slip on a wet bathtub. To prevent falls, use bathmats that are designed to stay in place. Put non-slip mats in the bathtub and install bars by the tub and toilet for stability.
  • Make sure railings are secure and there is ample lighting in all stairwells.
  • When you receive a new medication from a physician, repeat the instructions back to him or her to ensure that you understand how to take it correctly.
  • If you have any side effects from your medication or don’t think it’s working the way it should be, speak with your doctor right away.
  • Take all medications exactly as prescribed. Use a calendar, chart, or pill boxes to aid in remembering to take the correct medication in the proper doses.
  • Do not stop taking a medication without first speaking with your doctor.
  • Keep a list of your medications in your purse or wallet. Should an incident occur where you are suddenly hospitalized, the treating physician will then know exactly which medications you are on and in what dosages.
  • Vision deteriorates over time, and the elderly are particularly susceptible to certain ocular conditions. Schedule a yearly eye exam to obtain an updated prescription for eyeglasses and to monitor any changes in ocular health.
  • Ensure walkways and stairwells, both inside and outside the home, are well lit and free from clutter.
  • Place nightlights in common pathways, such as between the bedroom and the bathroom.
