What Can You Expect in a Nursing Home?

When it comes time to place a loved one in a nursing home, it can be a difficult transition period for both you and your loved one. For the most part, nursing homes are skilled facilities that take very good care of their clients and families. There are a few things that you should expect from a nursing home no matter what.

Clear Expectations

The overall cost of the facility should be clear. Terms and conditions of nursing home contracts can be confusing and complicated. When meeting with the facility, members of the staff should clearly explain the terms and conditions of the contract in a way that is simple for you to understand. Specifically ask if Medicaid will cover the cost of the facility if the resident can no longer pay.

Adequate Staffing

Neglect of patients in nursing homes usually arises in one out of two situations: 1) understaffing and 2) poor communication and training among staff. When visiting a nursing home, make sure to ask how many people are employed and how many are available at one time during the day and at night. Ensure that there is a registered nurse on staff every night. If you suspect that there are not enough employees, the best time to visit your family member is at night. It is usually apparent the facility is understaffed during the night shift.

Excellent Treatment of Residents

No matter the resident’s medical or physical difficult, each resident in the facility should receive excellent care. There are nursing homes that specialize in different medical problems just like hospitals. Ensure that the facility you choose focuses on the difficulties the resident has, such as dementia or Alzheimer’s. The facility should be comfortable discussing treatment options with you and provide you with the necessary information to make the best choice.
